Exfoliating Science

What are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are medical cosmetic treatments where a targeted chemical solution is applied to the skin to gently exfoliate damaged skin cells. As the outer layer, or outermost layer, sloughs off over a few days, fresh new skin emerges beneath.

Deep Chemical Peel / Deep Peel

An advanced peel targeting texture, discoloration, fine lines, and signs of aging through deeper exfoliation and skin renewal.

Uses carbolic acid (phenol) for deep facial lines, scaly patches, or severe wrinkles. Deep chemical peels require specialized clinical oversight and extended recovery, whereas superficial and medium peels remain the preferred choice for regular skin maintenance.

Feel the Peel

What is the Chemical Peel procedure like?

Your appointment begins in our Florence space with a detailed review of your medical history, skincare routine, and current skin condition. We clean your skin thoroughly to remove surface oils and impurities.

Once your skin is prepared, the chemical solution is applied evenly across the treatment area using a brush or gauze. You will feel a mild tingling or warm sensation as the solution works to break down dull surface cells. For a light peel or medium peel, this sensation lasts just a few minutes before we neutralize or cleanse the area. We finish your visit by applying a soothing barrier serum, a thick moisturizer, and broad-spectrum sunscreen before going over your post-treatment instructions.

Ready for Smoother Skin

Am I a candidate for Chemical Peels?

A good candidate for chemical peels is anyone looking to reduce fine lines, smooth uneven skin, or refresh a dull complexion without invasive surgery. While light chemical peels are safe for various skin types and complexions, those with darker skin must be evaluated carefully to avoid post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or temporary or permanent changes in skin color.

Patients who should avoid chemical peels or pause treatment include those with active cold sores, open wounds, active herpes outbreaks, severe allergies, or those who are pregnant. If you have a history of cold sores, your provider may prescribe an antiviral medication before your visit to ensure a safe healing process.

Chemical Peels Recovery & Results

Recovery

Recovery depends on the depth of the peel chosen for your treatment plan. With a light peel, you may experience mild redness and light flaking that clears within 3 to 5 days. Medium depth peels involve more noticeable peeling and redness, taking five to seven days for fresh skin to heal.

During recovery, treated skin will eventually peel naturally. It is vital that you never pick or pull at peeling skin. Keep your face deeply hydrated with a thick moisturizer, avoid active ingredients like retinol or exfoliants, and stay out of direct sun exposure. Once initial peeling resolves, you can safely wear makeup again.

Results

As the old, damaged surface sloughs off over five to seven days, you will see a brighter, smoother complexion emerge. Your skin tone will look noticeably more even, dark spots will fade, and fine lines will appear softened.

While a single light peel offers an instant boost, optimal results for stubborn sun damage or acne scars typically require a series of 3 to 6 treatments spaced a month apart. Maintaining a daily sunscreen routine and scheduling seasonal touch-ups keeps your healthy glow long-term.

Chemical Peels Frequently Asked Questions

Discomfort is very mild for light and medium peels. You may feel a warm, tingling sensation for a few minutes while the chemical solution is applied, which quickly calms once it is neutralized.

You will notice a brighter glow after your very first peel. For deeper skin conditions like stubborn hyperpigmentation, sun damage, or fine lines, a series of 3 to 6 sessions delivers optimal results.

Yes! Chemical peels are frequently paired with other cosmetic treatments such as dermaplaning, laser resurfacing, or injectables like soft tissue filler and Botox to address multiple facial concerns at once.

A light peel uses mild acids like glycolic acid or salicylic acid to exfoliate only the outer layer of skin with minimal downtime. A medium peel uses stronger agents like trichloroacetic acid to reach deeper damaged skin cells for more dramatic renewal.

Not necessarily. Light superficial peels often cause only faint, micro-flaking that easily washes away during your daily routine, allowing you to go about your normal day without heavy peeling.

Follow your provider's post treatment instructions closely: keep skin hydrated with a gentle, thick moisturizer, refrain from picking flaking skin, hold off on active skincare ingredients for a week, and wear broad-spectrum sunscreen daily.
